LOUISVILLE, KY / AGILITYPR.NEWS / May 12, 2021 / Family Scholar House Class of 2021: Meet Heather Glidewell - Nursing Graduate
Each year since its establishment in 1995, Family Scholar House (FSH) has served disadvantaged residential and nonresidential single moms, dads, and their children with a comprehensive, holistic continuum of care that meets them where they are and empowers them toward their educational, career and family goals. These individuals and families have experienced poverty, unstable housing, and, most often, domestic violence.
Regarding education, participants enroll in the accredited colleges of their choice to pursue their chosen courses of study to obtain a post-secondary degree. FSH helps participants access financial assistance to pay for classes and books. Through financial aid, Pell grants, scholarships, and sometimes student loans, participants attend school on a full-time basis. Many of the participants also obtain work-study assistance through their colleges or universities. All participants meet regularly with their Academic Coach to review educational progress.
An FSH educational standout is Heather Glidewell, currently a senior at the University of Louisville majoring in Nursing. A very ambitious student with her eyes squarely on the future, Heather loves attending classes and consistently excels academically. She is a graduate of the Jefferson County Public Schools’ Georgia Chaffee Teenage Parent Program (TAPP), which is designed to prevent school dropout due to teen pregnancy and parenting. For the past 50+ years, she has enabled thousands of young women to complete their high school education. Shortly after her graduation, Heather moved into FSH with her daughter Khloe.
Heather has a GPA of 3.5 AT UofL and is currently working at their Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), the student nurse’s apprenticeship program for Norton Healthcare,
And she has a job offer to work in the Norton Emergency Department after graduation. She and 4-year-old Khloe are very active participants at FSH. Heather is a beautiful asset to the organization, always eager and willing to volunteer for FSH whenever and wherever she is needed.
“Nursing has always been my dream career, and thanks to everyone at Family Scholar House, that dream is about to come true,” says Heather. “The whole staff has been behind me throughout my educational journey, and I will be forever grateful to them all.”
