POTUS Executive Order: Statement of Kidney Health Management Expert Joe Vattamattam, CEO Healthmap

“The incentives in the healthcare system today are upside down for patients suffering from kidney disease, encouraging in-center dialysis over home dialysis and transplants. Today’s executive order is a step in the right direction toward correcting what is broken in the system.

We’ve been in the middle of it for years, with our clinical experts, reservoir of big data, analytics and artificial intelligence focused just on kidney health, and value-based programs driving early detection, care coordination, effective transplants and home-based dialysis in concert with the National Kidney Foundation of Florida.

We know that early detection is as difficult as it is imperative to effective treatment. We know that an effective transplant is better for the patient than prolonged dialysis. We know that when it is needed, dialysis at home is safer, more effective, less expensive and drives much greater patient satisfaction. We know that the U.S. lags far behind other developed nations in the adoption of home dialysis. So, we know that today’s executive order is going to help thousands of patients across the country.

Likely the next significant leap forward for people suffering from end-stage renal disease (ESRD) will come in 2021 when the 21st Century Cures Act, enacted in 2016, allows them to choose Medicare Advantage (MA) plans. That will bring more coordinated care, lower out-of-pocket costs for patients, improved healthcare outcomes and lower overall program costs. MA plans will need to be ready to pursue and guide patients through the more effective route of a kidney transplant. They will need to address the in-center versus in-home dialysis conundrum and huge unit cost fluctuations. And they will need to know how to best coordinate ESRD care for this high-risk patient population.

For now, today’s executive order is going to make a real difference for people suffering from kidney disease today.”
