Round The World Payments Race team journeys with Tall Ship Pelican of London at Belfast Maritime Festival

BELFAST, UK, May 25, 2019: A team taking part in the first ever Round The World (RTW) Payments Race made the historic TS Pelican of London, docked at Donegal Bay, its first stop on an epic journey from London to Amsterdam.

The Round The World (RTW) payments race challenges four teams to make their way round the world travelling west, whilst facing a series of payments-related challenges along the way. The only catch is that each racer can use one payment method (cash, card, cryptocurrencies or mobile phone) or face immediate disqualification.

The TS Pelican is currently docked at Donegal Bay as part of the Belfast Titanic Maritime Festival taking place from May 25-27.

Team Card is led by fintech professional Sophie Theen, accompanied by cameraperson Chai Rolfe who is documenting the whole journey. Sophie said, ‘Clare, the Captain, made us very welcome aboard their beautiful ship. It’s a rare opportunity to come aboard a tall ship like this and the Maritime Festival looks fantastic. We would have loved to stay much longer but we’ve got to dash off to the airport!’

Sophie and Chai are travelling through three checkpoints Northern Ireland, Hong Kong and Lithuania on their journey which began from Trafalgar Square on May 23rd and finishes on June 4/5 at Money20/20, Europe’s largest fintech event.

Pelican of London is an ocean-going, sail training ship 45-metres in length with 43 berths, that is owned and operated by the charity Adventure Under Sail. The ship has been specifically designed to give up to 30 young people an exciting, exacting and exhilarating seafaring experience. A journey under open skies and to far horizons in which to enjoy life, make new friends, build confidence, work as part of a team, use perseverance, initiative and leadership to sail The Pelican to distant shores.

About Adventure Under Sail

Part clipper, part pirate ship. The Pelican is a unique, fast, three masted sailing ship, the essence of blue water sailing. A Tall Ship, yes. But handy as they come. This is a ship with wings, with a corsair rig and able to challenge vessels twice her size. Pace and space are what she offers. For comfort and style, she has few equals.

Based in Bristol, The Pelican sails throughout the summer on a series of voyages to UK and European harbours, including maritime festivals in historic ports and competing in Tall Ship Races. In October each year the ship leaves on an amazing six-month educational Trans-Atlantic voyage, visiting France, Spain and the Canaries on her way to the Caribbean islands, Panama and Costa Rica, returning to her home waters in April via Cuba, Bermuda and The Azores.
