Solon High School Students “GirlUp” to Raise Money for International Charity!

SOLON, OH -- On May 18th from 11am-2pm, GirlUp Solon High School chapter participants (an organization that impacts the lives of more than 48,000 girls worldwide through leadership and training programs), will be hosting “The GirlUp Summer Kick-Off Picnic and Fundraiser” at Arthur Road Elementary School in support of GirlUp’s SchoolCycle campaign to raise funds to provide bicycles for girls in need in developing countries.

Both GirlUp and SchoolCycle have a powerful and impactful mission. GirlUp is a United Nations campaign that works to secure healthcare, educational, social and economic opportunities for adolescent girls in developing countries. GirlUp gives girls the resources and platform to start a movement for social change wherever they are. SchoolCycle is a campaign that provides bicycles to young girls to help them access education and stay in school. The organization’s main goal is to help eliminate one of the biggest obstacles keeping girls out of school: distance. By helping to provide bikes, this helps young girls travely quickly and safely to and from school, and gives them the independence to travel freely around their communities.

To date, GirlUp has provided 1,550 bicycles to girls in Malawi, and 250 bicycles to girls in Guatemala. Just one $125 donation gives a girl a bike that can change her life! It’s the Solon’s chapter’s hope and goal that they can continue to support this powerful and important mission at their May 18th fundraiser!

This year’s Solon event will feature a variety of activities for the whole family to participate in together. This includes: games, live entertainment, food trucks, raffle baskets, and more! The fundraiser will donate all proceeds to the campaign to help support and continue their mission.

“We are really excited to kick off this fundraiser in May after months of preparation! The GirlUp and SchoolCycle campaigns are very near and dear to our hearts, and we believe that every girl deserves every equal opportunity to succeed in life.”, said Rachel Zhou, president of GirlUp. “We are looking forward to an afternoon of fun with lots of activities to enjoy at the picnic, and hope to raise enough money to help as many young girls as we can worldwide!”
