1960 MINI COOPER S EVOCATION WHICH LED THE 1990 MONTE CARLO CHALLENGE RALLY ALL THE WAY TILL A NAVIGATION ERROR BROUGHT IT IN AT NINTH – NOW FOR SALE WITH H&H CLASSICS AT DUXFORD ON OCTOBER 16TH
Entered in the forthcoming H&H Classics Duxford auction on October 16th this Mini started life in 1960 as a standard production Mini-Minor, but went on to rally glory, just missing a history-making win in the 1990 Monte Carlo Challenge. It is estimated to sell for £9,000 to £13,000.
The Monte Carlo Challenge is the most authentic winter epic offering the pressures of driving the worst roads in Europe in the thick of mid-winter – and hopefully the satisfaction of surviving and finally descending from the French Alpine snow and fog to the brilliant sunshine of the Mediterranean.
Modified to Rally specification this Mini was entered in the first Monte Carlo Challenge and started from Glasgow carrying the number 60, driven by Messrs Shand and Mackley.
A great drive saw them leading the Rally outright until an unfortunate navigation error in a timed section on the final day saw them tumble down the order to finish ninth overall.
There are extensive hand-written diary notes of this historic drive by Shand and Mackley in which they note the darkness of midnight in the Alps with ice on the inside of the windows making visibility difficult and later a furious policeman in Monte Carlo with his hand on his gun watching them lost and struggling and trying to exit a tiny square in the Principality.
This Mini has been continually updated and entered its current ownership nine years ago. It has been competing continuously and currently sports a fully balanced 1310cc engine, ready to go on to further sporting glory!
Former race driver John Markey, who sourced the car for H&H Classics says: “What a perfect car to use and enjoy for such a small outlay…..it comes with a spare Downton engine and gearbox.”
Converted into a historic rally car and campaigned on the 1990 Monte Carlo Challenge and 2015 Wessex Rally among others it has an uprated 1310cc A-Series engine complete with fully balanced crank / clutch / flywheel / rods / pistons, big valve stud head.
It has 'Cooper S' specification discs / drums, MKI bodyshell with internal fuel and brake lines, heavy-duty suspension, 4 synchro gear transmission, FIA rollcage, high back seats, twin fuel tanks, 65 Amp alternator, multi-fusing, spot / fog lights and a spare Downton prepared 998cc engine in running order.
