Aurecon awarded highest number of recipients for Top 30 Most Innovative Engineers
Global engineering, design and advisory company Aurecon has reinforced its leadership in design excellence and engineering innovation by taking out five coveted spots on this year’s Top 30 Most Innovative Engineers list – the highest number of any company in 2019.
Developed by Engineers Australia, recipients of the 2019 list were awarded to the following Aurecon professionals: Matthew Dahms, Associate (Resources); Andy Mak, Associate (Built Environment); Ben McGarry, Associate (Energy), Amelia Milne, Associate (Built Environment) and Steve Wilson, Principal Power Generation Engineer (Energy).
Aurecon’s Managing Director – Design, Innovation & Eminence Dr Kourosh Kayvani commended all recipients for this impressive citation that recognised the wide range of skills, talent, passion and commitment of engineers to shape and design our future.
“We are delighted that Aurecon has such a significant representation on this year’s list, which is testament to the company’s ethos of co-creating clever, innovative solutions to some of the world’s most complex challenges,” Dr Kayvani said.
“As evidenced by our recipients’ projects, each has brought vital experience, technical capability and drawn on deep knowledge to see the opportunities and possibilities. I am immensely proud of their achievements and congratulate Matthew, Andy, Ben, Amelia and Steve whole-heartedly.”

Sustainable design solutions
Dedicated to achieving innovative and sustainable solutions, Amelia, Ben and Steve were recognised for their respective roles in projects contributing to the future of sustainable energy in Australia.
Amelia led the Aurecon team in delivering a 100 per cent electric and zero-carbon ready building for the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music, while Ben was involved in engaging a broad range of stakeholders for the Virtual Power Plant of the South Australian Government.
Steve leveraged his expertise in the emerging field of battery energy storage systems to deliver the 100 MW battery project for the Hornsdale Power Reserve and the Alice Springs 5 MW battery storage system.
Simple solutions for complex design problems
Living by the Aurecon principle ‘making the complex simple,’ Matthew and Andy both delivered innovative and holistic design solutions through deep technical expertise and unconventional thinking.
Matthew was recognised for his unconventional conveyor belt design for the Wiggins Island Coal Export Terminal (WICET) Shiploader System resulting in a potential 700 MWh reduction in annual power consumption while Andy was recognised for his Digital Wind Method, which allows engineers to directly solve the wind-induced dynamic effects of complex and tall buildings.
Engineers Australia’s Top 30 Most Innovative Engineers list recognises engineers who have made noteworthy contributions to their organisations, the community, environment, industry, and the engineering profession.
