Australian vintage posters set to soar at New York auction on November 14

UK / AGILITYPR.NEWS / October 29, 2019 /

Prices expected to rise to $12,000 for a single design from 1929 as Swann Auction Galleries celebrate 20 years of Travel Poster sales

Rare vintage travel posters by leading Australian artists are expected to make tens of thousands of dollars at Swann Auction Galleries in New York on November 14.

Dating back to the 1920s, the designs promoting the attractions of the country come from two of the most prominent Australian artists of the genre, both of whose work is housed in Australia’s national collections.

James Northfield, best known for his work with the Australian National Travel Association, was one of the stars of the 1999-2000 exhibition Follow the Sun – Australian Travel Posters 1930s-1950s at the National Library of Australia.

Here an early design from around 1925 promotes Wattle Time / Travel by Train, depicting a young woman carrying a large bouquet of flowers about to board a train for a special excursion from Ferntree Gully and Gembrook via Yarra Glen Healesville, Warburton and Etham to Hurstbridge and Beaconsfield to view seasonal blooms. The estimate is $4,000 to $6,000.

Another Northfield poster is the circa 1930s Australia / The Blue Mountains, with an estimate of $1,500 to $2,000.

Three designs come from Percival Albert Trompf, a specialist in historical subjects, starting with a striking view of chic young women on a balcony looking out on to a packed beach with classic cars parked all along the front. Simply titled Australia and dating to 1929, it is expected to top $12,000 in the sale of Rare & Important Travel Posters.

Two other Trompf designs are each estimated at $800 to $1,200. Australia Orient Line / 20,000 Ton Ships is undated, while Winter Holiday by Rail to Southern Australia is circa 1950s

.
