Baby Sensory Shares How Sensory Play Boosts Early Brain Development

UNITED KINGDOM / AGILITYPR.NEWS / September 16, 2025 / The first months of a baby’s life are a time of extraordinary growth. Research shows that a newborn’s brain is just a quarter of its adult size, yet by the end of the first year it will have doubled in volume, fuelled by the rapid formation of trillions of new connections between brain cells.

At the heart of this crucial stage lies sensory play, a scientifically proven way to support brain growth and early learning. Baby Sensory, one of WOW World Group’s flagship programmes, was created to give parents and carers the tools to make the most of this special window of time.

Classes (held nationwide) provide activities such as massage, music, textures, visual stimulation, and sensory signing - all carefully structured to help babies explore, discover, and connect with the world around them.

Dr Lin Day, child development expert and founder of Baby Sensory, explains, “In the first few weeks after birth, an astonishing two million new connections are created in the brain every second.

These connections are strengthened by repeated sensory experiences such as hearing a parent’s voice, touching different textures, or moving to music. Without stimulation, the brain prunes away unused pathways. This is why sensory play is so important – it lays the foundations for later learning, emotional regulation, and social interaction.”

Many of the parents who attended Baby Sensory for their children have seen remarkable progress in their little ones.

One of these parents, Courtney, said, “When my daughter started nursery at 9 months old, she was just so confident, curious and independent and I really think it’s down to baby sensory. I definitely recommend and would 100% be back if I have any more! My daughter has just loved every session. It’s such a lovely community to be a part of and definitely one of my favourite parts of motherhood.”

Kayleigh, another mother, added, “I have been coming to baby sensory since my baby was 5 weeks old and it is our favourite part of the week! Now he’s older I love being able to let him crawl about in a safe space and interact with other babies and adults. Every week is different and so interactive. My baby is so inquisitive and loves playing which I believe is down to being part of this wonderful class from such a young age.”

For class leaders too, the joy lies in watching families grow in confidence and connection. Seeing babies reach milestones such as smiling, crawling, or communicating through signs is the highlight of their teaching journey.

Baby Sensory classes are a blend of science, play, and community. For parents, they offer reassurance and practical ideas that can be woven into everyday life; for babies, they open the door to curiosity, learning, and joy during the most formative stage of their development. For everyone involved, it is an absolute win!
