Bakar BioEnginuity Hub, Designed by MBH Architects, Receives Design Award of Excellence in Docomomo US’s 2023 Modernism in America Awards

NEW YORK, NY / AGILITYPR.NEWS / September 14, 2023 / Bakar BioEnginuity Hub, a transformational project by MBH Architects, has been honored with the prestigious Design Award of Excellence in the 2023 Modernism in America Awards, presented by Docomomo US. This recognition underscores the exceptional dedication to modern preservation, innovative design, and community collaboration embodied by Bakar BioEnginuity Hub.

The Modernism in America Awards, now in its tenth year, spotlight projects that exemplify the highest standards of modern preservation, documentation, and advocacy. A distinguished panel of experts, led by jury chair Barbara Bestor, FAIA, selected Bakar BioEnginuity Hub for this esteemed award.

This year's awardees represent the pinnacle of preservation practice, showcasing the profound impact that architects, designers, preservation professionals, and advocates can have in safeguarding our modern heritage. These projects, ranging in scale, budget, and typology, demonstrate that a commitment to preservation can overcome even the most significant challenges.

In her statement, Docomomo US Executive Director Liz Waytkus emphasized the symbiotic relationship between creative design and preservation, highlighting the imperative to protect modern architecture from demolition or insensitive alterations. Bakar BioEnginuity Hub, formerly known as the Berkeley University Art Museum & Pacific Film Archive, serves as a remarkable example of how community pressure and visionary partnership can thwart demolition, allowing for the rebirth of an iconic Brutalist building into a modernized, seismically secure, and operationally carbon-neutral space for scientific innovation.

This transformational formula, as witnessed in the case of Bakar BioEnginuity Hub, offers a replicable model to save threatened sites today while reducing unnecessary waste in landfills, ultimately preserving our Modern heritage for future generations.

The Modernism in America Awards is the sole national program dedicated to celebrating individuals and projects committed to sensitively and productively preserving, restoring, and rehabilitating our modern heritage. The program aims to propel these preservation efforts forward, elevate appreciation for the modern era, and raise awareness about the persistent threats to modern architecture and design.

The 2023 Modernism in America Awards ceremony will take place on Thursday, November 2, 2023, at the Design Within Reach Third Avenue Showroom in New York City. Tickets and event sponsorship opportunities are available at www.docomomo-us.org/events/modernism-in-america-awards.
