While the headline is genuinely impressive, Pallet Truck Shop says it risks giving smaller businesses the wrong idea about what's achievable - and affordable - right now.

Large-scale automation, from AI-driven demand forecasting to fully automated storage and retrieval systems, often delivers its biggest savings at significant scale, backed by substantial upfront investment. For a smaller online retailer or growing e-commerce business, that kind of spend simply isn't realistic - no matter how attractive the percentage saving sounds on paper.

According to Pallet Truck Shop, the more useful question for most of its customers isn't whether to automate but where smaller, more immediate efficiency gains can genuinely be made instead.

Phil Chesworth, Managing Director at Pallet Truck Shop, said, "Figures like this are great news for the big players who can afford to invest in full-scale automation, but they can be a bit misleading for everyone else. Most of the businesses we work with can’t spend six or seven figures on robotics, and honestly, most of them don't need to.

"What we see time and again is that a huge amount of everyday inefficiency in a smaller warehouse or fulfilment space comes down to much simpler things. Equipment that's the wrong size for the job, staff spending longer than they should manually moving stock because the right pallet truck or stacker isn't available, that kind of thing adds up fast, and it's fixable without a major capital project."

Electric pallet trucks, stackers and lift tables can make a real difference: they're a fraction of the cost of full automation, but they noticeably speed up picking and moving stock compared with manual equipment alone - which is often exactly the kind of gain a smaller business needs.

"Our advice is simple. Don't feel like you're falling behind because you can't match a headline automation statistic. Look at what's slowing your own operation down day to day, and in a lot of cases, the fix is a lot more affordable than people assume," Chesworth added.
