The opportunity

Pubs and small brewery taprooms across England are gearing up for beer gardens reopening today by tapping fresh casks of beer for the first time since December.

Cask beer, also known as real ale, is only available in pubs and taprooms and is the Nation’s National drink, so as pubs gear up for reopening outdoors today many publicans will be focusing on making sure their cask beer is setup and ready to be served in tip-top condition. Below you will find interviewees and filming locations for businesses gearing up for reopening today.

With pubs closed for large portions of the last twelve months cask beer sales have been decimated – down over 70% year-on-year. A new cask beer campaign launched by the Society of Independent Brewers, the Campaign for Real Ale, the British Institute of Innkeeping and Cask Marque, is encouraging beer drinkers to buy a pint of local cask beer when they head back to the pub – because by buying a pint of cask beer you’re not only supporting your local pub, but helping out small independent breweries too.

Check the hashtag #CaskIsBack across Facebook, Twitter and Instagram to see brewers and pubs gearing up for reopening - and from later today the beer drinkers toasting their first pint of cask beer back in the pub.

The Issue

Sales of hand-pulled cask beer, which can only be sold in pubs, have been hit incredibly hard by the UK’s Coronavirus restrictions – with sales of this fresh British beer down 70% over the last twelve months.

Cask beer is unique because of its freshness – brewed to be served fresh and hand-pulled from chilled pub cellars in a few days.

During the Covid lockdown some 6 Million pints of cask beer from small independent breweries had to be poured away, with the brewers who made it left to foot the bill. 80% of the beer made by small breweries is sold in pubs, so those same breweries have been ramping production back up ahead of pubs reopening.
