WHY: There are 977 school districts in California, which serve 6,275,469 students and 295,222 teachers in 9,846 schools, which are governed by 1,050 school boards. In the top 1,000 largest school districts by enrollment in the United States, California has 186 school districts. The largest school district in California is Los Angeles Unified School District which serves 655,455 students in the most recent academic year.


Proposition 98 funding for K-12 schools and community colleges for 2021-22 is $85.8 billion. Which represents an increased investment of $14.9 billion in schools and community colleges above the level funded in the 2020 Budget Act, and the highest level of funding for K-14 schools ever. When combined with a one-time supplemental allocation of $2.3 billion and the benefit of CalSTRS and CalPERS rates ($1.1 billion), the state funding available to schools increases to $89.2 billion.
