Chambers and Partners publishes Canada 2020

The first fully digital guide to the best lawyers and law firms across the region

Chambers and Partners, the world’s leading research and analytics firm for the legal profession, today published Chambers Canada 2020 - a comprehensive rankings guide to the best lawyers and law firms across Canada.

This is the 5th annual edition of the guide - and the first to be published exclusively online, highlighting Chambers and Partners’ commitment to digitalisation and sustainability. This year’s guide features 852 ranked departments and 2,305 ranked lawyers, including 397 individuals newly ranked for the 2020 release.

Among the 138 ranked practice areas are several new sections for 2020, including Business & Human Rights, Crime and Retail. Other changes have been made to enhance our coverage of existing areas such as IP and Telecoms, Media & Broadcasting, which have been split into more specific and user-friendly sub-sections.

In addition to nationwide tables, our rankings include provincial tables covering Alberta, British Columbia, Ontario and Quebec, Manitoba and Saskatchewan as well as Northern and Atlantic Canada. Provincial rankings are based upon the location in which a firm or lawyer practices regardless of client or deal/case location.

The Chambers and Partners Canada research team consists of 5 full-time members of staff with a mix of professional backgrounds, including qualified lawyers, journalists, linguists and political scientists. Law firms and clients are offered the opportunity to conduct interviews in both English and French.

Research is carried out over a six-month period, and the team use one-to-one telephone interviews rather than blanket surveys and questionnaires to ensure they get the most authentic results. Thousands of client calls were made during the compilation of the 2020 guide, in addition to the thousands of pieces of written feedback received.

As with all Chambers and Partners guides, the diligence of the research team and the painstaking process means more credible and valuable data. Chambers rankings are tough to achieve and remain the benchmark for firms all over the world.

“The breadth and depth of Chambers and Partners’ coverage is unmatched, and we are the only guide that can genuinely claim to be based almost exclusively on client feedback. A ranking in Chambers is a significant achievement for a lawyer or law firm and we are excited to share this year’s guide to help purchasers of legal services make informed decisions about the top lawyers and law firms across key areas of the law,” said Joanna Lane, editor of Chambers Canada.

More about Chambers Rankings

Chambers Canada ranking decisions are made collaboratively by research analysts and the Canada editor and deputy editor. Rankings are also determined through an assessment of work identified on a firm’s submission, along with external feedback on the firm’s service and an emphasis on opinions provided by clients.
