Consultation on Proposed Listing of Certain IChEMS Register Chemicals in Australia

BAAR, SWITZERLAND / AGILITYPR.NEWS / April 09, 2026 / SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, has published SafeGuardS 047.26, focusing on the planned addition of 14 classes of industrial chemicals to Australia’s Industrial Chemicals Environment Management (IChEMS Register) Instrument 2022.

The one-month consultation was opened by Australia’s Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW) on March 23, 2026.  The IChEMS Register assigns chemicals to one of seven schedules based on their environmental risk characteristics, as set out in the IChEMS Principles.

Key provisions of the consultation include proposals to:

  • List glycerides under Schedule 2, a category for chemicals considered unlikely to pose environmental harm
  • Add fatty acids under Schedule 3, a category for chemicals with some potential to cause environmental harm
  • Classify two chemicals as Schedule 4, a category for chemicals that may cause harm to the environment
  • Assign seven chemicals to Schedule 5, a category for chemicals likely to cause environmental harm
  • Designate three chemicals under Schedule 7, a category for industrial chemicals likely to cause serious and irreversible environmental harm and for which no essential uses are identified

The proposed revisions will impact Schedule 7 stakeholders across multiple industries and supply chains, including manufacturers, users, importers and exporters of these chemicals, as well as mixtures and articles that contain them.

The consultation is open for comments until April 24, 2026.

SGS experts publish SafeGuardS to keep stakeholders informed about regulatory changes that could impact their business. SafeGuardS 047.26 includes further information on the Schedule 7 chemicals and their applications, as well as a table listing the full names and abbreviations of the relevant substances.

Stakeholders are encouraged to refer to the original SafeGuardS 047.26 for more details.
