UNITED KINGDOM / AGILITYPR.NEWS / March 12, 2025 / Recent reports have raised concerns about a potential link between weight loss injections and an increased risk of depression and anxiety. This possible link underscores the need for proper medical supervision from a qualified healthcare provider when taking weight loss medication, warns Well By Vertis, the digital health startup with a UK-based team of GPs and expert weight loss nurses.
A newly published study in Scientific Reports has suggested that patients taking GLP-1 receptor agonists - commonly used for weight loss - may have nearly three times the risk of depression and double the risk of anxiety compared to those not on the medication.
Researchers from Chung Shan Medical University in Taiwan analysed data from over 160,000 obese patients, noting concerns that past studies may have overlooked potential psychiatric side effects by excluding participants with a history of mental health conditions.
While these findings are significant, they do not mean weight loss medications should be avoided altogether.
Previous research has even suggested that GLP-1 medications may have a role in treating depression. The key, say health professionals at Well by Vertis, is appropriate medical supervision to manage potential side effects. This is the only way to ensure that patients remain physically and mentally well throughout their treatment plan says Stephanie Smith, Lead Nurse at Well by Vertis.
“The conversation around weight loss injections and mental health is complex, but one thing is clear: medical support is essential. Being overweight contributes to depression and anxiety in itself, with studies showing you are 55% more likely to experience anxiety and depression with an increased BMI. This makes it important that the assessing clinician assesses the risk vs benefit of weight loss medication before prescribing.
“At Well by Vertis, we don’t just prescribe medication and leave patients to manage on their own. As part of our standard consultation we cover social history, this includes any mental health conditions (even those that are well managed) as well as noting any mental health medications.
“Our service also includes regular check-ins with healthcare professionals who can identify early warning signs of any side effects, including mood changes, ensuring patients feel supported every step of the way.”
Beyond managing the physical aspects of weight loss, Well by Vertis also recognises the psychological challenges that can arise when a person’s body shape changes. Rapid weight loss can have a profound emotional impact, and without the right support, some individuals may struggle to adjust.
With regular monitoring, Well by Vertis provides a safety net for patients, ensuring any concerns - physical or psychological - are addressed early, preventing unnecessary distress.
Smith added, “A patient’s wellbeing is about more than just numbers on a scale. We believe in a holistic approach, combining medication with lifestyle changes and professional support to achieve sustainable, healthy weight loss.
“Those considering weight loss injections should safeguard their safety by choosing a provider that offers comprehensive medical supervision.”
