Drownings a Leading Cause of Brain Injury or Death in Children, May is National Water Safety Month

AUSTIN, TEXAS / AGILITYPR.NEWS / May 22, 2024 / Every nine seconds, an infant, child, teenager, or adult sustains a traumatic brain injury, yet fewer than one in 20 will receive the necessary treatment (Texas Brain Injury Alliance), highlighting the urgency to raise awareness and funds to provide support, resources, and financial assistance to families caring for a child with a brain injury. According to the National Library of Medicine, non-fatal drownings are a leading cause of brain injuries in children. As part of National Water Safety Month, Team Luke Hope for Minds (TLHFM) is featuring children who survived a drowning and sharing water safety tips on their social media.

Providing immediate aid to children with acquired brain injuries and their families is a top priority for TLHFM. In addition to spreading awareness about resources for these families, TLHFM raises money to provide financial assistance. With families on the waitlist, the need for support is critical to help these children get the necessary therapies, treatments, equipment, etc.

In addition to providing financial assistance, TLHFM offers guidance, resources and virtual support groups for parents, siblings and brain injury survivors. The newest support group, Ambiguous Grief Support, provides coping strategies to help parents understand and work through the grief of losing the child they knew before his/her accident. The nonprofit will hold a Pediatric Brain Injury Conference & Resource Fair for families and their children Oct. 25-26 in Austin.

“More and more families are seeking help navigating a new life and coping with the fact that their child is forever changed, and has new and sometimes ever-growing needs,” said Ronda Johnson, Senior Director of Family Services. “Our community groups empower caregivers with knowledge and connections to others on the same journey.”
