COLCHESTER, ESSEX / AGILITYPR.NEWS / April 01, 2025 / Colchester-based care home, Crouched Friars, has established a men’s social club so male residents can get together for a beer and a chat. After learning about the rise of men’s social clubs across the UK, the team at Crouched Friars decided to offer something similar to their male residents.
"We felt it was important to provide our male residents with a space where they can come together and spend quality time together as men,” said Paulina Eagle, Home Manager.
"We don’t have many men at Crouched Friars and so this dedicated space allows them to connect with one another. Whether they're playing cards, enjoying a drink or just chatting, it's about creating an environment where they feel comfortable and supported."
Since its establishment, the men's social club has been a resounding success, becoming a weekly staple in the Crouched Friars activity calendar. During the sessions, the male residents play a variety of board games and cards, while enjoying crisps and even a pint of beer.
Older men are an increasingly vulnerable section of society when it comes to experiencing loneliness and isolation.
With the escalating 'male loneliness epidemic’ happening across the world and one in four older people experiencing regular feelings of loneliness, it is more important than ever to ensure elderly men feel supported.
"We're passionate about supporting our male residents and the men's social club has proven to be a tremendous success," Activities Coordinator, Sharon Shrimpton, said.
"At Crouched Friars, our focus is on person-centered care. We strive to support our residents to continue enjoying activities they loved in their younger years. These types of social clubs play a crucial role in supporting men's mental health by combating isolation and fostering a sense of belonging."
The men's social club is just one of the many activities that Crouched Friars offers to its residents to ensure they can continue to enjoy the activities they love.
