Family Scholar House Class of 2021: Meet Briana Lee

USA / AGILITYPR.NEWS / May 14, 2021 / Each year since its establishment in 1995, Family Scholar House (FSH) has served disadvantaged residential and nonresidential single moms, dads, and their children with a comprehensive, holistic continuum of care that meets them where they are and empowers them toward their educational, career and family goals. These individuals and families have experienced poverty, unstable housing, and, most often, domestic violence.

Regarding education, participants enroll in the accredited colleges of their choice to pursue their chosen courses of study, intending to obtain a post-secondary degree. FSH helps participants access financial assistance to pay for classes and books. Through financial aid, Pell grants, scholarships, and sometimes student loans, participants attend school on a full-time basis. Many of the participants also obtain work-study assistance through their colleges or universities. All participants meet regularly with their Academic Coach to review educational progress.

And one of those who are about to embark on her dream career due to the efforts of FSH is Briana Lee, a senior at the University of Louisville. An anthropology major with an impressive 3.5 GPA, Briana was selected to be a UofL Anthropology Research Fellow and is currently a researcher at Corn Island Archeology, Inc., a female-owned and operated small business providing cultural resources consulting services.

She is very active at UofL and Family Scholar House, where she and her 2-year-old daughter Miah moved in October 2018. Briana’s love of nature and the world around her have played a massive role in her career choice. Her plans include owning her farm one day and residing in another country where she can be exposed to other cultures and ways of life.

For the immediate, Briana has accepted a position with the Freedom Preparatory Academy in Memphis, Tennessee, starting this summer. Freedom Academies are some of the best schools in the south whose mission is to prepare all students in grades Pre-Kindergarten through 12 to excel in college and life. “I am so thrilled for my move to Memphis this summer, and it wouldn’t be possible without Family Scholar House,” says Briana. “Thanks to them, my future is something for my daughter and me to look forward to, which I couldn’t imagine just a few short years ago.”

About Us

FAMILY SCHOLAR HOUSE

The mission of Family Scholar House is to end the cycle of poverty and transform our community by empowering families and youth to succeed in education and achieve life-long self-sufficiency. Born from Project Women, the nonprofit organization was established in 1995 by representatives of six orders of nuns. As Family Scholar House, its name reflects a bigger, broader mission, and comprehensive, holistic services for disadvantaged single parents, their children and foster alumni. What began with only four families is now a recognized national best practice headquartered in Louisville, Kentucky, serving more than 9,000 people annually on five separate campuses, and focused on education as a primary path for ending the cycle of inherited poverty.
