Final rule issued by US EPA on DecaBDE and PIP (3:1) TSCA revisions

GENEVA, SWITZERLAND / AGILITYPR.NEWS / December 20, 2024 / SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, has published SafeGuards 173.24 on the US Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) amendment to the final rules for decabromodiphenyl (DecaBDE) and Phenol, isopropylated phosphate (3:1) (PIP (3:1) under the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA). The final rules cover these chemicals as well as the products and articles containing them and will become effective on January 21, 2025.

Widely used as flame retardants, DecaBDE and PIP (3:1) have been identified as persistent, bioaccumulative and toxic chemicals. The EPA’s final rule was issued on November 19, 2024, in the Federal Register, and is intended to reduce potential exposure and address implementation matters.

The final rules come after several revised proposals for the control of these chemicals under TSCA, including the extension of the PIP (3:1) compliance deadline to October 2024.

SGS experts publish SafeGuardS to keep stakeholders informed about regulatory changes that could impact their business. SafeGuardS 173.24 includes a table of highlights in the latest final rule on DecaBDE and PIP (3:1).

Stakeholders are encouraged to refer to the original SafeGuardS 173.24 for more details.
