GENEVA, SWITZERLAND / AGILITYPR.NEWS / July 15, 2025 / SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, has published SafeGuardS 096.25 to announce the release of Amendment A1:2025 to the EN 71-2 standard on toy flammability.
EN 71-2 specifies flammability requirements for toys and is part of the wider EN 71 series that ensures toy safety across Europe. The new amendment was published in June 2025 following revisions related to the ‘Standardization Request,’ an agreement between the European Commission and CEN/CENELEC on the standards work program.
The amendment introduces clarifications and aligns certain aspects of the standard with EN 71-5 (chemical toys other than experimental sets) and EN 71-13 (olfactory board games, cosmetic kits and gustative games). Key updates include:
There are no major changes to the previous EN 71-2:2020 version. Once harmonized and published in the Official Journal of the EU, the amended standard can be used to demonstrate compliance with the Toy Safety Directive 2009/48/EC. The harmonization date and transitional period are yet to be announced.
SGS publishes SafeGuardS to keep stakeholders informed of important regulatory updates. SafeGuardS 096.25 provides a table with an overview on the amendment and its implications for toy manufacturers and importers.
Stakeholders are encouraged to consult SafeGuardS 096.25 for full information on the amendment and its impact on compliance.
