Fuel Poverty Awareness Day 2024: Helping UK Households Stay Warm This Winter

UNITED KINGDOM / AGILITYPR.NEWS / November 26, 2024 / On Wednesday, 27 November, National Energy Action’s Fuel Poverty Awareness Day 2024 will highlight the growing crisis of fuel poverty in the UK. Energy Saving Genie is calling on councils, charities, and individuals to take action by promoting its free grant checker to ensure vulnerable households can access vital heating and insulation upgrades - fully funded by energy companies under the ECO4 scheme.

Fuel poverty is a growing concern in the UK, with an estimated six million households struggling to afford adequate heating. The energy crisis has exacerbated the situation, forcing families to choose between heating their homes or meeting other essential needs such as a hot meal.

This is not just a cause of discomfort: it can be a matter of life or death. Cold homes contribute to serious health risks, including respiratory conditions, cardiovascular diseases, and mental health issues. Tragically, around 10,000 deaths each year are attributed to living in cold homes. This is not just heartbreaking: it is unfair and, most of all, it can be avoided.

Kate Hallewell, founder of Energy Saving Genie, said, “Fuel poverty is a crisis

that can be significantly reduced with the right action. There is funding available to upgrade homes but many vulnerable residents don’t know about it. Our grant checker makes it easy for households to see if they’re eligible and take the first step toward a warmer home.”

The ECO4 scheme provides a lifeline to low-income and vulnerable households by funding energy-saving measures such as heating system upgrades, loft insulation, and cavity wall insulation. By improving the energy efficiency of homes, these upgrades reduce energy consumption, lower bills, and create healthier living environments.

Energy Saving Genie’s free grant checker simplifies the process for households to determine their eligibility for ECO4 and other government-backed schemes, such as the Great British Insulation Scheme (GBIS) and the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS). These initiatives collectively aim to make UK homes warmer, safer, and more energy efficient – so that everyone can stay warm, for less.

This Fuel Poverty Awareness Day, Energy Saving Genie urges everyone to get involved. Sharing the grant checker with friends, family, and local communities can make a real difference for those struggling to keep warm. Individuals and organisations are also encouraged to use the campaign hashtag #FuelPovertyAwarenessDay to spread awareness.

Kate adds, "Everyone deserves a warm and safe home, yet fuel poverty continues to affect too many households. With the right support, we can make a real difference. By helping UK households access available grants, we can ensure more people have the opportunity to live in a warm and energy-efficient home this winter.”
