Heating and Cooling Systems

Before the snow shovels come out; homeowners should check their heating system to make sure it is working properly. This includes checking/replacing the air filter (every 90 days) and testing the heat on a mild day before it is needed. It’s also time to clean things like the chimney, fireplaces and ductwork. Plumbing

Extreme cold temperatures can result in freezing pipes. Haller suggests removing hoses from outside faucets, cleaning gutters, and winterizing outdoor piping. Now is also the time to locate the home’s main water shut-off valve and confirm it is accessible.

Electrical

Fall is the perfect time to repair any outdoor electrical issues and replace batteries in smoke detectors and carbon monoxide monitors. Homeowners should also confirm electrical meter bases are securely mounted against the house.
