Great British Bake Off star Chetna Makan kicks off charity fundraiser to help save the orangutan.
A charity fundraising event taking place throughout April will be kicked off by Chetna Makan, star of The Great British Bake Off.
International Animal Rescue’s (IAR’s) Cakes for Apes event, now in its fourth year, encourages people to raise money for its orangutan project by baking cakes to sell to friends, family and colleagues. This year, the event has been adapted to take account of lockdown restrictions and includes online activities to allow for social distancing.
To kick off Cakes for Apes in style, Chetna is holding a livestream baking class on 1st April at 6pm (BST.) The class is free but IAR is urging participants to make a donation during the event to support the charity’s vital work protecting Critically Endangered Bornean orangutans and their dwindling rainforest habitat.
Mary Howard, Community Fundraising Executive, says: “We’re absolutely thrilled that Chetna has agreed to hold the livestream baking class. It’s the perfect way to kick off Cakes for Apes and for anyone who loves baking or orangutans – or both – this is an event not to be missed!
Chetna will be baking, chatting and taking questions from the online audience. It’s going to be a real treat for us all!”
“I’m delighted to be involved in Cakes for Apes,” says Chetna. “IAR’s team in Indonesia is doing extraordinary work protecting orangutans and their rainforest home and they rely on the generosity of the public to fund it. I hope everyone will enter into the spirit of the class, enjoy the baking and make a donation. As IAR’s slogan goes: “Bake a cake, save an ape,” or indeed, join the class and “Bake a difference.” I think this is going to be a very fun way of supporting such a worthwhile cause!”
Chetna will be making a delicious vegan chocolate ginger nut cake – a very moist, delicious cake with gingernut running through the batter. Layered with gingernut ganache icing. The recipe is entirely vegan, but can be adapted to suit individual dietary requirements if needed. The recipe will feature the delicious gingernut butter of IAR’s partners Meridian Foods.

About Us
Our vision is a world where humans and animals coexist in sustainable ecosystems. Our mission is to build awareness and implement effective systems such that habitats and animals are protected.
At International Animal Rescue we not only save animals from suffering, we also rehabilitate and release them back into the wild and work to protect their precious natural habitats. Our work includes cutting free and caring for captive bears in India and Armenia, rescuing and rehabilitating orangutans and other primates in Indonesia and treating injured and orphaned howler monkeys in Costa Rica. Our aim is to return animals to their natural environment wherever possible, but we also provide a permanent home for those that can no longer fend for themselves.
As human populations expand, wildlife comes under increasing threat. By rescuing individual animals belonging to species like the orangutan and reintroducing them into protected areas in the wild, our work also plays a role in the conservation of the species as a whole.
