On February 28, 2019, Health Canada issued an updated industry guide covering the regulatory flammability requirements for futons.
The guide includes information on:
Futons are a Japanese form of mattress that can be rolled or folded. In the West, they are often used in combination with a frame that converts from a sofa to a bed. They are subject to the requirements of both the Canada Consumer Product Safety Act (CCPSA) and Mattresses Regulations (SOR/2016-183).
The regulations define a mattress as an item that is intended, promoted or normally used for the purpose of being slept on that contains resilient material enclosed within a ticking. The definition of mattress does not include:
The issuing of a new industry guide does not signify any change in the Mattress Regulations (SOR/2016-183).
