Midland Pallet Trucks Warns of Spring Stock Turnover Surge in DIY & Garden Retail

UNITED KINGDOM / AGILITYPR.NEWS / March 10, 2026 / Spring may feel far away, but the first signs of its arrival are already here, with lighter evenings and improving weather. There is one more sign most people may not notice: distribution centres supplying the UK’s DIY and garden sector are already shifting gears, with winter inventory moving out and bulky seasonal stock is moving in - triggering a marked rise in pallet volumes across regional hubs.

According to Midland Pallet Trucks, a leading retailer of pallet trucks, stacker trucks and lift tables, the transition from cold-weather ranges to spring and outdoor lines creates one of the most physically demanding periods of the year for warehouse teams. Compost, paving slabs, fencing panels and outdoor furniture sets replace smaller boxed goods, increasing both load weight and awkward handling requirements.

Spring turnover in DIY and garden retail is characterised by dense, heavy products stacked high and moved frequently. Pallets of compost and aggregates can significantly exceed the average weight of winter stock, while large flat-pack garden furniture demands careful manoeuvring through tight warehouse aisles.

This seasonal pivot also brings a sharp increase in pallet movement volumes. As retailers build inventory ahead of the spring rush, warehouses must process incoming stock while clearing remaining winter lines. The result is more double handling, more trailer unloading, and sustained daily equipment use over longer shifts.

Phil Chesworth, Managing Director at Midland Pallet Trucks, says the strain of this period is often underestimated. “Spring is sometimes seen as a straightforward build-up to summer sales, but from a warehouse perspective it’s one of the toughest transitions of the year,” he said. “You’re dealing with heavier, more awkward products at exactly the point when volumes are climbing. Equipment that copes comfortably with boxed winter goods can feel very different when it’s moving pallets of paving or bulk bags.”

He added that preparation should begin well before March. “Retailers who review their materials handling setup early tend to avoid bottlenecks and operator fatigue later. Smooth-rolling pallet trucks, reliable hydraulics and stable load control make a real difference when you’re shifting heavier stock all day. It’s not just about speed; it’s about maintaining safe, consistent performance as the workload ramps up.”
