BATH, UK / AGILITYPR.NEWS / March 05, 2020 / With more than 180 million steps recorded so far at schools all over the UK, Moki is bringing new insight into children’s movement, while providing a safe, simple and fun way for teachers to engage their students in an active curriculum.
“Moki has engaged both staff and pupils in a really positive way! As a school that's passionate about nurturing healthy bodies and minds, it is an incredible resource for us.” - Chris Willan, Water Primary School, Lancashire
Moki is changing the way schools deliver and measure physical activity in their students.
For the first time, teachers can now use an innovative wristband and software application that captures movement and step data for their whole class. Moki generates a live reporting dashboard for the school day and the impact on individual pupils’ activity levels. It also provides useful tools to drive meaningful change.
Pupils tap their bands in and out every school day using contactless technology. This sends real-time data to the Moki app. Results can be viewed on-screen or printed out into user-friendly reports for schools and teachers.
The Moki Band is a comfortable, durable, water-resistant accelerometer. There is no display, so students cannot see their individual data and no personally identifiable information needs to be captured. Instead, the idea is for schools, parents and children to use Moki to encourage group exercises and class challenges, and to stimulate active learning.
Up until now, the challenge for schools has been how to capture movement data accurately. Commercial activity trackers are prohibitively expensive to buy in bulk and don’t have the connectivity to allow teachers to access group data. Moki is the first solution specifically designed to be used by teachers. From the contactless technology and batteries, to the app design and pricing, it is effective and accessible for schools large and small.
In the UK Government's 2019 physical activity guidelines for children it states:
'Children and young people should engage in moderate-to-vigorous intensity physical activity (MVPA) for an average of at least 60 minutes per day across the week. This can include all forms of activity such as physical education, active travel, after-school activities, play and sports.'
“We are the first activity tracker that can easily measure MVPA across a whole classroom of children,” says Dylan Thompson, Professor of Physiology and one of Moki’s founders. “The data we have already gathered provides a fascinating insight into regional, age and gender trends. The potential for how that data is used in the future is almost limitless - and that is really exciting for us.”
To date, Moki has tracked over 180 million steps in schools all across the UK. With more schools signing up all the time, that number is increasing exponentially. In February 2020, the company launched the ‘Moki Grade’ - a simple rating system that can be used by schools to show the activity levels of their pupils.
James Huggins, co-founder of Moki, says: “Schools already understand the importance of an active curriculum and are under increasing pressure to deliver. The problem is, up until now, they have had no means to accurately measure and evidence the impact of their efforts. Moki was created to solve that problem, but we are only scratching the surface at the moment. There are more than 20,000 primary schools in the UK alone. Our ambition is to start a ‘Moki Movement’ that will generate the data to empower not only kids and schools but also policy makers and even governments.”
Feedback from participating schools all over the country has been overwhelmingly positive:
“Moki really is powerful and can have a huge impact on how schools identify children that need engaging and inspiring to be active.” – Ian Holmes, Thorner Primary School, Leeds
“Moki is an excellent, sustainable use of sports premium. It ticks a lot of the Ofsted indicators and is great for tracking and measuring levels of physical activity across the school." - Stacey Cannon, Selby Abbey Primary School, Selby
