Casinos were one of the businesses hardest hit by the lockdown and subsequent Tier system. Grosvenor Casinos in Bristol was no exception, with its doors closed for much of the time and most staff furloughed.

However, when forced to close, the casino put the time to very good use by providing over 3,300 hot meals to families in need, blue light workers and charities.

With Bristol moving into Tier 2 after yesterday’s announcement (17th Dec) the casino can reopen, albeit with restricted opening hours.

Monika Borska is manager of the Grosvenor Casino in Anchor Road, Bristol and comments:

“We were very pleased to be a position to help charities and people in need locally during lockdown and when we were in Tier 3, by opening up our fully equipped kitchen and with two of our fully trained chefs preparing hot meals.

“We were delighted to be able to make a little difference to the community with over 3,300 hot meals given out.

“As we reopen, the initiative will come to an end but we will again be part of the community in a different way.

“We can’t wait to see our regular customers again, many of whom come in to see us for a chat or a meal as much as for the traditional casino activities. The level of protection measures we’ve put in place to keep people safe is amazing and we are so pleased we can reopen and welcome everyone back.”

The casino had to close completely during the lockdowns and when the city was in Tier 3.

However, the casino swiftly moved to help the local community during lockdown.

Manager of Grosvenor Casino, Bristol, Monika Borska says, “In the early days of lockdown we had food left over as it came so suddenly. I couldn’t give it away. I cried!

“After over 100 phone calls and some great connections from the local community, we were quickly able to find people in need who would appreciate a hot meal from our trained chefs.”

Grosvenor Casino in Bristol has provided over 3,300 hot meals to police units, supported housing, children in need, vulnerable people and families across Bristol and Gloucestershire.

Monika adds, “We’ve had lots of thank you emails and cards and it’s fantastic to know we are making a real difference to people in Bristol and Gloucestershire.

“As a company we support Carers Trust and typically donate large sums to this worthwhile charity; the local free food initiative which we ran in Bristol and in nine other locations in the UK during lockdown and tier 3 was a great way to give back to the community on a local level.”
