BAAR, SWITZERLAND / AGILITYPR.NEWS / February 26, 2026 / SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, has published SafeGuardS 029.26, reporting on the US state of California’s proposed ban on bisphenol A (BPA) in paper proofs of purchase, as part of the state’s move to eventually prohibit all bisphenols.
Assembly Bill (AB) 1604 was introduced in California in January 2026 to prohibit intentionally added BPA in paper receipts provided to consumers by businesses, or those created by a manufacturer. This prohibition would be expanded to all intentionally added bisphenols after 12 months.
‘Proof of purchase’ has been defined in AB 1604 as a receipt issued at the point of sale for the retail of food, alcohol or other tangible personal property, or for the provision of services.
SGS experts publish SafeGuardS to keep stakeholders informed about regulatory changes that could impact their business. SafeGuardS 029.26 includes a helpful table summarizing highlights of AB 1604 and its associated effective dates.
