UNITED KINGDOM / AGILITYPR.NEWS / April 08, 2025 / Renfrewshire residents without driveways can now access an innovative new solution to charge their electric vehicles (EVs) at home, thanks to a successful trial of a cross-pavement charging system. The solution designed to remove the trip hazard along pavements is now available for residents to apply for, making home charging accessible to those who previously had no option but to rely on expensive public chargers.
For many EV owners, domestic charging rates offer the most affordable way to power their vehicles, with overnight tariffs being five to ten times cheaper than public charging stations. However, for the 39% of households in Renfrewshire without off-street parking accessing these savings has been a major challenge - until now. Charge Gully’s cable channel provides a simple yet effective solution, allowing residents to charge safely from their home electricity supply without creating a trip hazard on public pavements.
The easy-to-use system works by embedding the patented metal channel into the pavement outside a resident’s home. The resident inserts the charging cable, locks the lid, and begins charging, ensuring a secure and tamper-proof connection that sits flush with the pavement. When the charge is finished, the resident simply takes the charging cable out of the channel.
Following the successful trial, Renfrewshire residents can now apply for the system via the Charge Gully website. The company will also handle all necessary council permits to ensure a smooth installation process.
Ian Mach, Charge Gully Director, said, “We are glad to bring our solution to Renfrewshire residents which will help with the adoption of EVs in the council area and the climate benefits that they bring along.”
Stephen Heron Roads Infrastructure and Operations Manager for Renfrewshire Council added, “If you do not have a driveway, there are challenges with on-street EV charging in that it is illegal for any person to place or run a cable along or across a public highway under the Highways Act 1980. Having a cable trail from a home across the pavement to an Electric Vehicle could cause a trip hazard. Renfrewshire Council have worked with Charge Gully and some EV users in Renfrewshire with the installations of a gully channel and lockable lid for an EV charger cable from the resident's home.”
While residents are advised that public parking remains open to all vehicles, meaning they are not guaranteed a space in front of their home, the solution is particularly beneficial for those who can park outside their property at least twice a week - in the vast majority of cases, that is more than enough to keep one's EV charged throughout the week and beyond, depending on the use.
As the UK moves towards a zero-emission transport future, solutions like Charge Gully will help make EV ownership more accessible and practical. By removing one of the biggest barriers to home charging, Renfrewshire’s adoption of this technology supports both local sustainability goals and the wider national move to greener - and more affordable - transport options.
