SDG Tent in Davos Mobilizes Action to Accelerate Change

GENEVA, SWITZERLAND / AGILITYPR.NEWS / December 13, 2019 / The SDG Tent at the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting 2020 in Davos from 21-24 January 2020 will put action into focus, aiming to accelerate action needed to achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The tent will host close to 30 events organized by more than 10 organisations, with Platinum partners including Royal DSM, Salesforce, Yara, WBCSD and InTent, and Gold partners including UPS, Cargill and Swarovski.

“Today, the world is faced with increasingly complex challenges including climate change, resource scarcity and (hidden) hunger. Business has an important role to play in solving these, together with the public sector and civil society. With just 10 years to go until the UN Sustainable Development Goals have to be delivered, it is important to have an open, impartial space in Davos where we discuss what business needs to do, what collective action is needed, to deliver. DSM is proud to be a founding partner of this important initiative,” says Feike Sijbesma, CEO of Royal DSM.

“Nature loss, climate change and inequality are the greatest systemic risks facing humanity. Yet we continue to degrade natural systems and exacerbate climate change, fueling poverty, hunger and inequality, and undermining our future prosperity and well-being. Markets and our economic system, in their relentless pursuit of growth and myopic obsession with short-term financial performance and shareholder return, ignore nature’s value as well as our dependence and impact upon it. There are solutions. We need a dramatic shift beyond business as usual, beyond GDP and material consumption as measures of progress. And we need to find ways to meet our needs and aspirations within the bounds of one planet. We must give natural, social, human and financial capital equal consideration in boardrooms and governments around the world,” says André Hoffmann, President of InTent.

“The global challenges we are facing are staggering. Food plays a critical role in the fight against climate change – We cannot solve the climate crisis without transforming the food system. The SDG tent is evidence of a collective responsibility, exercised by food value chain players to drive a fundamental change in the way we grow and share food to nourish 10 billion people on our finite planet. With only a decade left to achieve the SDGs, urgent action is imperative,” says Svein Tore Holsether, President and CEO, Yara International.

The SDG Tent is hosted for the second year in a row to put sustainability on the global agenda. The events in the tent will aim to accelerate change in an impartial, open platform that is accessible to all, located outside of the security zone at Davos. Sessions will fit within the 50th Annual Meeting’s wider theme of “Stakeholders for a Cohesive and Sustainable World”, and cover a range of topics from artificial intelligence, health and climate to the plastics economy, youth engagement and youth entrepreneurship. Notable speakers and participants will include Chief Executives, Heads of organizations and political leaders, with a particular focus on the Community of Global Shapers and the Forum of Young Global Leaders, who represent a new generation of innovators.
