SGS Provides Summary of EU Formaldehyde in Articles Regulation
GENEVA, SWITZERLAND / AGILITYPR.NEWS / August 08, 2023 / SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, has published a SafeGuardS to help businesses understand new European Union (EU) restrictions on formaldehyde and formaldehyde-releasing substances in articles.
Regulation (EU) 2023/1464 was issued on July 17, 2023. It contains important provisions, such as:
- New entry 77 created in Annex XVII of Regulation (EC) 1907/2006 (Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals, Annex XVII of REACH)
- Test methods specified for formaldehyde emissions from articles and the interior of vehicles
- Product exemptions
The regulation also emphasizes that toys aimed at children of all ages are within the scope of the restrictions.
Products within the scope of the regulation:
- Furniture and wood-based articles
- Articles other than furniture and wood-based articles
- Road vehicle interiors, including trucks and buses
SGS has published SafeGuardS 091.23 to help stakeholders understand the requirements in the new regulation. It includes a table detailing the requirements for each article type, the test method to be employed and the effective date. There are also details of exemptions.
Regulation (EU) 2023/1464 will be implemented in phases, starting on August 6, 2026.
