SGS Summarizes German Alignment of Formaldehyde Emission Requirements with the EU
GENEVA. SWITZERLAND / AGILITYPR.NEWS / May 29, 2024 / SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, has published an overview of Germany’s repeal of its national law on formaldehyde emissions from wood-based panels and other products.
In February 2024, Germany amended its Chemical Prohibition Ordinance (ChemVerbotsV) and repealed the requirements for formaldehyde emissions from:
- Wood-based panels
- Furniture containing wood-based panels
- Other products falling under Entry 1 of Appendix 1 to Section 3 of this piece of national legislation
This follows the issuing of Regulation (EU) 2023/1464 to regulate formaldehyde and formaldehyde-releasing substances in articles by the European Union (EU) in July 2023. Regulation (EU) 2023/1464 must be adopted by all member states, with implementation in phases, starting August 7, 2026. The repeal therefore aligns Germany’s requirements with the rest of the EU.
Entry 1 of Appendix 1 to Section 3 of the Chemicals Prohibition Ordinance will be repealed on August 7, 2026 – the same day the EU law on formaldehyde emissions becomes applicable.
