Setting the Gold Standard for Sustainability

BURTON ON TRENT / AGILITYPR.NEWS / September 15, 2025 / As part of its continued commitment to sustainability, Russell Roof Tiles has recently achieved a major award for its ongoing support for Net Zero.

At COP29 last year, the launch of the Intergovernmental Council for Buildings and Climate drew attention to the pivotal role of buildings in global sustainability efforts. The UK has set a target of Net Zero carbon emissions by 2050, and Russell Roof Tiles' own commitment is to achieve Net Zero by 2040, a decade earlier.

Making buildings more energy efficient through modern construction, as well as circular economy principles, and moving away from fossil fuels, is vital.  The UK is making substantial strides toward this ambition, and Russell Roof Tiles is ensuring that it is reducing emissions and making progress across both its product range and its own manufacturing facilities.

The company is therefore delighted to have these efforts recognised with a Gold (Homes Sector) Award at the recent (SCSS) Award Ceremony as part of the Supply Chain Sustainability School's annual Summit.

Launched in 2012 the Supply Chain Sustainability School is a multi-award-winning initiative that represents a common approach to addressing sustainability within supply chains. It provides a virtual learning platform around sustainability, to upskill those already working or aspiring to work within the built environment sector.

The school covers all aspects of the built environment and focuses on the topics of sustainability, offsite, BIM, Lean construction and management, providing practical learning through sustainability training, networking, e-learning modules, tailored assessments, and online resources. Its vision is for “an industry where everyone will have the skills and knowledge to deliver a sustainable future.”

Russell Roof Tiles Corporate Sustainability & Development Director, Daniel Hancox received the awards and comments. “Sustainable business practices are a vital topic for everyone working in our sector. The construction supply chain needs to adapt, and learning will help drive change. The award reflects our work in utilising the Supply Chain Sustainability School's resources to improve our own work in sustainability, as well as for our customers.

The Gold award is one of three accolades that were awarded following the analysis of data based on training and resources utilised, providing a league table on how each organisation has performed against other members in the last 12 months.

Daniel added, “We’re especially proud of this recognition. It highlights our sustained Gold Member status with the SCSS and reinforces our dedication to training, development, and supplier collaboration, acknowledging our work with the major national house builders and construction companies.”

Russell Roof Tiles’ continued success on the road to Net Zero is thanks to its strategic site upgrades and product development. Its new £18.5m upgraded plant in Burton on Trent (the manufacturer’s largest investment to date) features a solar PV system which helps to power the production facility as work continues on-site. Since its introduction in late 2024, it has generated over 20,000kWh of clean electricity for the factory, saving approximately 21.6 tonnes of CO2 emissions and immediately offsetting energy costs.

The Burton facility will also house the manufacturing line of Russell Roof Tiles’ revolutionary concrete roof tile, Bute3®. The first of its kind in the UK, the all-new triple tile has the strength and characteristics of a regular large-format tile, speeding up installation time and helping to reduce the carbon output of future projects.

Russell Roof Tiles is a leading independent concrete roof tile manufacturer supplying products for national housebuilders and high-profile social housing and commercial projects. The company produces hundreds of thousands of tiles and related fittings and accessories every week that are used on pitched roofs across the UK.
