As governments tighten scrutiny of low-value imports and review duty-free thresholds, fast-fashion giants such as Shein and Temu are increasingly expanding their use of UK and European fulfilment networks.

For warehouse operators, that change brings a different set of operational challenges. Rather than processing millions of individual parcels arriving from overseas, fulfilment centres are handling greater volumes of palletised stock that has already been imported in bulk. This is a significant change in the flow of goods through the supply chain, and one that is placing fresh demands on warehouse operations.

Midland Pallet Trucks says this evolution is changing how materials handling equipment is used behind the scenes. Facilities supporting high-turnover ecommerce businesses rely on rapid replenishment, frequent stock movements and constant reorganisation as bestselling product lines change from one day to the next.

"We've become used to thinking about companies like Shein and Temu as businesses that ship straight to consumers from overseas," said Phil Chesworth, Managing Director at Midland Pallet Trucks.

"That's still part of the picture, but we're seeing much more inventory being positioned closer to the customer. Once stock is sitting in a UK warehouse it has to be received, stored, replenished and picked just like any other retail operation."

He believes that changes to international trade rules are accelerating a trend that was already gathering pace.

"Warehouses supporting these platforms are handling incredibly fast stock turnover," he said. "Products arrive in bulk, move through storage quickly and are constantly being repositioned as demand changes. That creates a very different workload for pallet trucks and stackers compared with a traditional warehouse where stock might sit for weeks before moving again."

Unlike conventional retail distribution, fast-fashion fulfilment often involves thousands of product lines with relatively small quantities of each item. That increases the amount of internal movement required to keep picking locations stocked and dispatch areas supplied, even if overall warehouse space remains unchanged.

Midland Pallet Trucks says the result is greater emphasis on equipment that can withstand frequent daily use while remaining easy to manoeuvre through busy fulfilment environment, such as pallet trucks, a stacker trucks or a lift tables. Reliability also becomes increasingly important, as even short periods of downtime can disrupt high-volume picking operations.
