Survivors: Life Unfiltered Exhibition: October 2021 – Gallery@oxo

LONDON, UK / AGILITYPR.NEWS / October 26, 2021 / Maddy Warren aka “Queen of Dialysis” - 23 years on life sustaining kidney dialysis, campaigner, skydiver, marathon runner and TEDx speaker has been driving the creation of a unique new photography exhibition Survivors: Life Unfiltered, sharing powerful human stories and images of people living with kidney disease, dialysis and transplants.

Survivors was virtual throughout 2020 and will be open at Gallery@oxo in London between 26 October - 7 November 2021.

Richard Booth, award winning photographer and official Olympic photographic artist, joined forces with Maddy to bring to life through art the strength, vulnerability and resilience of those who are affected by Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD). We devised the project through a shared passion and drive to raise awareness of how kidney disease affects people and to highlight powerful human stories.

Over 3 million people in the UK have CKD, and these numbers are increasing year-on-year. Our exhibition shines a light on some of the challenges they face by contrasting their outward facing daily lives with the realities of their condition.

From the youngest aged 2 through to the oldest at 78, including Andy Cole, former England footballer and kidney transplant recipient, our 34 survivors share thought-provoking, inspiring human stories covering topics such as facing mortality, mental health, body image, gratitude, survivors’ guilt, silver linings and reconciling with a ‘new normal’. Diptych images show two sides to living with an invisible life limiting condition; the outward positive face that people share with the world and the inner hidden life coping with fears, mental anguish and the vast time drain and ongoing burden of treatment.

It became rapidly apparent at the start of the pandemic that many people in intensive care with COVID-19 also developed Acute Kidney Injury requiring life sustaining dialysis. The stories and messages of our exhibition have now taken on a heightened meaning and relevance since society has faced the most challenging health emergency in a century.

About Us

About Survivors: Life Unfiltered

Survivors: Life Unfiltered is a unique photography exhibition, using art and storytelling as a way to portray the strength, vulnerability and resilience of those who are affected by Chronic Kidney Disease. The aim is to inspire, provoke and educate. Few people understand what it is like to rely on a dialysis machine to stay alive, or to survive due to the immeasurable humanity of an organ donor. Come and see the stories of those who live it every day.
