UNITED KINGDOM / AGILITYPR.NEWS / May 07, 2025 / Forget old school coding lessons on ancient computers: The Code Zone, a leader in innovative coding education for children, has officially launched its cutting-edge augmented reality (AR) technology across several of its local clubs, giving young coders the chance to immerse themselves in the worlds they create!
Unlike traditional tech learning environments, The Code Zone's members aren’t necessarily aspiring developers: they’re curious, game-loving kids who enjoy experimenting and creating. The AR platform taps into that mindset. Developed fully in-house over several years, this trailblazing tech is now in active use in Cambridge, Haverhill, Bury St Edmunds, Saffron Walden and Bishop’s Stortford, with plans to expand further in September.
This second-generation AR application is a major leap in how coding is taught and experienced. Children begin by coding on a desktop app, where their changes are saved in real-time. They can then scan a QR code, put on a VR headset, and step directly into the interactive 3D environments they've built. Inside this augmented world, they can test, tweak, and explore their code hands-on – with changes appearing live on both headset and desktop.
The technology allows learners to interact with drones, flying cars, and other virtual objects, bringing their projects to life in a way that was previously impossible. Sessions are tailored to the child’s age, with younger members spending around 20 minutes in AR and older ones averaging 45. The result is a fun, engaging, gamified learning experience that mirrors what children already love about video games like Minecraft - all while building real-world coding skills!
“This is something truly special,” said Ashley Payne, CEO and Co-founder of The Code Zone. “We’ve spent years developing this technology because we believe that the future of coding education lies in immersion, interaction, and imagination. This AR system gives children a completely new way to understand the logic and impact of their code - not just on a screen, but in a space they can explore and shape. It’s fun, it’s educational, and it’s opening doors to creativity and problem-solving like never before.”
The response from members and parents has been overwhelmingly positive, and the clubs are now at full capacity with waiting lists. With even more innovation on the horizon - including plans for multiplayer virtual clubs and rollout to schools and app stores - The Code Zone is well on its way towards transforming how the next generation learns to code.
