Thousands of pounds in donations from “Cars On The Green” means that Watford Club has raised over £80,000 for charities

More than 1,500 classic cars from all over the south of England descended on Croxley Green yesterday (Wednesday) to celebrate the Watford and District Classic Vehicle Cubs annual “Cars on the Green event’ and thousands of pounds were raised.

It was a fitting tribute to the club, which this year is celebrating its 25th anniversary and with Wednesdays donations will have raised in excess of £80,000 pounds for local and national charities, some of whom attended the show yesterday.

Chris Hardy Chairman of the Club said: “It was our best event ever with vehicles queuing to get in when we opened the doors and hundreds on the green when we eventually had to shut down.”

The Clubs show is now believed too be biggest “midweek” show in the southeast and is organised by just 10 people but supported by an enthusiastic band of volunteers.

President of the Club Peter Watson said: We couldn’t do it without the volunteers who work tirelessly to ensure that our shows go from strength to strength.”

He added: “ There is no entry charge to the show we just ask people for donations and we charge a fee to stallholders. The money from both is then given to the charities. We are still counting the donations but several thousand pounds will be on its way.

“Its hard work,” said Peter Moss, a committee member who was up early on Wednesday morning to mark the green out with other committee, members and volunteers, “ but its very rewarding. We got a lot of compliments about how the show was run and how much people had enjoyed it.”

He added: “ We are always worried about ‘boy racers’ spoiling an event like this, especially after what happened in Stevenage recently but everyone behaved impeccably. We are also extremely grateful to the officers from Hertfordshire Constabulary who attended the event and helped us make it highly successful and safe.”

There were hundreds of different models and makes on display including a rare Swallow Doretti and a Piper racing car that was actually for sale.
