UV-328 Regulated By the EU Under POP Recast Regulation

GENEVA, SWITZERLAND / AGILITYPR.NEWS / July 31, 2025 / SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, has published SafeGuardS 108.25, reporting on the EU’s listing of UV-328 as a revision to Regulation 2019/1021 on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POP) Recast Regulation.

Recognized as toxic chemicals, POPs resist degradation and accumulate in the environment, posing significant risks to human and environmental health. UV-328 is mainly used as an ultraviolet light absorber in plastics, coatings, paints, cosmetics and food contact materials.

Following consultation in 2024, Commission Delegated Regulation (EU) 2025/843 was issued by the EU on July 15, revising Part A of Annex 1 of the POP Recast Regulation to include UV-328. The regulation also provides specific exemptions for intermediate use and other defined applications.

An unintentional trace contaminant (UTC) threshold has been established for UV-328 when it is found in substances, mixtures and articles. This limit value will be progressively tightened over a four-year period.

SGS experts publish SafeGuardS to keep stakeholders informed about regulatory changes that could impact their business. SafeGuardS 108.25 outlines key points of the POP amendment.

Stakeholders are encouraged to refer to the original SafeGuardS 108.25 for more details.
