Commentating on the news today (Wednesday 9 October) that the independent travel agents Hays had purchased all of Thomas Cook’s 550 stores from the official receiver, Unite Scottish Secretary Pat Rafferty said:
“Unite is delighted that Hays Travel has stepped in to save the former Thomas Cook shops potentially saving thousands of jobs. It’s as yet unclear whether all the sixty shops and all the jobs in Scotland will be saved, and there are also a number of legal issues which require further clarification. Unite was proud to step in to offer assistance and support for the workers when they had been abandoned by everyone including their employer and shamefully by the UK Government. Unite looks forward to representing our members to be employed by Hays Travel and to having discussions with the company about how we can assist in ensuring as many jobs are saved as possible. Whilst this is potentially good news for the Thomas Cook shop workers, the fight goes on with regards to the cabin crew and engineers.”
Unite Scotland is the country's biggest and most diverse trade union with around 150,000 members. The union is led in Scotland by Pat Rafferty.
