Universities Are Writing AI Policies for Teaching and Not Research, New Tool Suggests

According to industry data, 86 per cent of educational institutions now use generative AI, yet the majority of formal policies centre on academic integrity concerns such as cheating and plagiarism. The result is a growing policy gap around how AI should be used ethically and effectively in research.

The stakes are high: institutions that fail to establish clear research-specific AI frameworks risk reputational damage and may struggle to remain competitive for leading research funding. Blanket bans, meanwhile, risk leaving students and early-career researchers unprepared for a professional environment where ethical AI literacy is increasingly expected.

Some universities are beginning to adopt more nuanced approaches. Institutions such as the University of Oxford and the European University Institute have introduced guidance emphasising human oversight, transparent disclosure and rigorous source verification, rather than outright prohibition.
