Vintage Soviet Travel Posters Leave Estimates Behind to Top £10,000 at Ewbank’s Auctions
UNITED KINGDOM / AGILITYPR.NEWS / November 03, 2020 / A series of rare 1930s Soviet travel posters have trounced estimates at Ewbank’s Auctions selling for more than £10,000.
Promoting the triumphs and attractions of the Soviet philosophy just 15 years or so after the Revolution, the selection of seven posters depict appealing images of Moscow, the Volga river and the Trans Siberian Express had been expected to fetch a total together of no more than £3,600.
But with collectors from London and Germany competing furiously online to secure them, prices rose dramatically.
First up was a 1930s poster for the Tran Siberian Express, given a top estimate of £500, which sold for £1,700. Another celebrating 15 years since the Revolution had upper hopes of £400 but also went for £1,700.
Others with upper price guides of just a few hundred pounds went for £1,300 and £1,200. In all, they totalled £10,200 hammer.
“These posters come up for auction rarely and the result was fierce bidding online,” said Ewbank’s specialist Alastair McCrea of the October 30 Vintage Posters auction.
