Wakefield Wines - Australia, announces the launch of their Optimum Drinking Temperature Sensor throughout Canada

TORONTO, ON / AGILITYPR.NEWS / March 04, 2020 / FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

March 4, 2020 – Toronto, ON // Canada will now have access to the NEW innovative temperature sensitive technology on bottles which ensures perfectly chilled out Wakefield wines.  The serving temperature of a wine is often the crucial final element to how it will taste, and many wine drinkers could be missing out on the finesse and flavour of a balanced wine depending on what temperature they are serving their favourite drop.  This is all about to change, as Wakefield, a family owned winery based in the Clare Valley, Australia, has developed a solution to wine drinker’s temperature troubles with their latest label innovation, now available across Canada.

Now featured on the back label of Wakefield Estate and Promised Land ranges is the Optimum Drinking Temperature Sensor which uses thermo-chromatic ink technology that changes colour depending on the temperature of the wine, turning green when the white or sparkling wine is just right to pour, and turning fuchsia for the red wines.

This is the first time the technology has been used in an educational application allowing wine drinkers to know when the wine is at the optimum temperature using the designed gradient scale near the sensor.

“Temperature is a vital piece in making sure wine is enjoyed at its very best. While our winemakers take great care to ensure our wine is of utmost quality and value, the warm climate during summer is not so great for storing and drinking wine,” said Company Director and Export Manager Justin Taylor said.

“I ask any wine lover to try it for themselves, they will be amazed by the difference just a few degrees can make to their favourite red or white wines.”

According to a survey by the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation, the average Canadian home is between 20°C-21°C in winter, with temperatures ranging much more widely in summer. Most wine drinkers live by the ‘room temperature’ system for their red wines, but according to industry experts, today’s room temperature is far too warm for storing and drinking red wine.

This antiquated advice of drinking red wine at ‘room temperature’ originates from medieval French drawing rooms which were closer to a chilly 14˚C-16˚C. To get a red wine to the suggested serving temperature, Chief Winemaker Adam Eggins suggests putting it in the fridge 30 minutes prior to serving. This will give the wine time to chill to the optimum drinking temperature, turning the back label’s small seahorse sensor to a bold fuchsia colour.

As for whites, which are often served straight from the fridge, well below the 6°C-12°C suggested range, Adam suggests pulling the wine from the fridge 30 minutes prior to enjoying as this will give the wine enough time to warm up, opening the wines unique aromas and flavours.

The wines, with their new Optimum Drinking Temperature Sensor on the bottles are now available under Wakefield’s Estate Series and Promise Land range, as part of the LCBO Vintages Collection and Vintage Essentials.  Currently transitioning from their 2017 to 2018 vintage, all wines are priced between $16 and $20. Varieties include; Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay.

After four decades in the Clare Valley, Wakefield Wines remains proudly family-owned and run. The vision to build Australia’s most successful family owned wine company was set by Bill Taylor who, in 1969, purchased land with his brother John and father Bill Taylor senior by the Wakefield River in Auburn. This vision has been nurtured and expanded by the next generation, Mitchell, Justin and Clinton Taylor, who all have key roles in the organisation. Wakefield challenges world standards through its progressive practices, most evident in the family’s commitment to bottling all wines from the 2004 vintage under screw cap, the first major Australian wine company to do so. Wakefield’s ability to meld tradition and innovation results in regular recognition, both in Australia and on the highly competitive world stage. In September 2009, Wakefield’s Eighty Acres range became the world's first 100% carbon neutral wine range in accordance with the international standard for lifecycle assessment ISO14044
