Wigan Athletic Supporters Club Release Charity Single with Local Band in Final Push to Raise Funds for Wigan Athletic

UNITED KINGDOM / AGILITYPR.NEWS / August 20, 2020 / In a month that has gone from bad to worse for Wigan Athletic, with relegation confirmed amidst their administration controversy and departure of long-standing manager Paul Cook, the deadline to find a club buyer before the 1st September deadline is fast approaching.

The Wigan Athletic Supporters Club has raised over £190,000 so far to prop up the club by hosting online memorabilia auctions and other fundraising activities – the most recent of which include teaming up with local band Quaintest Show On Earth after their recent single ‘Good Old Days’ went viral on Facebook – reaching over 100,000 people in the town.

Thomas Jones, (left) lead singer, commented “the song is a love-letter to a simpler time, Wiganer’s love things ‘the way they were’ and the song seemed to come at a really good time - the message definitely resonated with the town, as we’re all a bit stuck in Wigan at the moment. We thought it would be great if we could convert some of the 100,000 people reached into money for the cause, and our keyboardist Mike Frost (right) who wrote the song is an avid Latics fan.”

The band reached out to the Supporters Club proposing they joined forces and release the single together, putting the track available as a free download with an honesty box donation page on Crowdfunder - generating over £500 before last night’s (Wednesday 16th) music video was released on the band’s Facebook page.

The video shows the band performing the song around the eerily empty DW Stadium facilities, mimicking Richard Ashcroft (also of Wigan descent) in his ‘Bittersweet Symphony’ video climbing on a car bonnet, in period costume outside local landmark Wigan Pier and lifting the prestigious FA Cup from the club’s unforgettable victory over Manchester City in 2013.

The music video premiered on Wednesday 19th at 6pm on Facebook. It was met with great reception and hopes to contribute significantly to the Supporters Club’s £250,000 fundraising target.
