ECO4 Deadline Pressure Mounts as Companies Fulfil Their Legal Commitments
Thu, Jul 03, 2025 04:59 EDT
Energy Saving Genie is warning UK households that time is running out to benefit from the government-backed ECO4 energy grant scheme. The grant scheme isn't expected to be maintained indefinitely, meaning that households should check their eligibility now before they miss out on support. While the ECO4 scheme is officially scheduled to run until 31 March 2026, the nature of the funding is very different from typical government grants. As the name suggests, the Energy Company Obligation is not a voluntary support scheme but an obligation; a legal requirement for energy companies to deliver a set number of home energy improvements. Once those targets are fulfilled, their obligation is complete, and the funding will begin to dry up. "We're already seeing early signs of pressure on funding availability, and we expect access to become increasingly limited as we move towards the end of 2025," says Kate Hallewell, Founder of Energy Saving Genie. The ECO4 scheme is designed to improve the energy efficiency of UK homes by offering grant-funded upgrades that reduce emissions and cut energy bills. These improvements can include loft or cavity wall insulation, heating system replacements, and a range of other measures aimed at reducing fuel poverty and making homes easier and more affordable to keep warm. Despite the scale of the scheme, many households are still unaware that they may qualify. Eligibility is broader than people assume, and households may meet the criteria if someone in the home receives income support, employment-related benefits, tax credits, or is living with a health condition such that could be triggered or exacerbated by cold housing conditions. Energy Saving Genie, which helps UK residents access ECO4 and other government funding schemes, offers a free online grant checker to guide users through the process and help them access critical support. The tool includes smart prompts that help individuals recognise whether their personal circumstances may qualify, even if they previously assumed otherwise. With energy prices still placing pressure on household budgets, securing energy-efficiency upgrades now could mean significant long-term savings. But with energy companies approaching their targets, the window for free support is closing fast. "The next six months will be crucial," Hallewell adds. "We're urging households not to wait until the funding is gone. If you think you might be eligible - or even if you're not sure - it's worth taking just a few moments to check. It could make all the difference this winter and beyond." For more information and to see if you may be eligible for financial assistance, check out Energy Saving Genie's free online grant checker: energysavinggenie.co.uk/ECO4-Grant-Checker/quiz-home.html

Vermont Strengthens PFAS Restrictions for Consumer Products
Wed, Jul 02, 2025 09:42 EDT
SGS, the world's leading testing, inspection and certification company, has published SafeGuardS 089.25 to outline the US state of Vermont's latest revisions to its restrictions on per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in consumer products. Signed into law on June 11, 2025, Act 54 (H238) amends Vermont's Commerce and Trade Laws (9 VSA Chapter 63) and builds upon the earlier Act 131, which originally established prohibitions on PFAS and other chemicals in a broad range of products. These revisions further align Vermont's regulations with national and global efforts to reduce exposure to these harmful substances. Key updates include the addition of cleaning products, dental floss and personal protective equipment (PPE) to the list of PFAS-restricted items. The legislation also prohibits fluorinated treated containers, with a phased ban culminating in a total prohibition by January 2032. Certain deadlines have been adjusted, including a delay to the PFAS ban on cookware, which is now effective from July 1, 2028. Act 54 introduces new definitions for regulated product types, such as 'cleaning products,' 'dental floss' and 'complex durable products', to provide clarity and support consistent enforcement. It also directs Vermont's Secretary of Natural Resources to submit reports on PFAS regulatory approaches across the United States and to make future recommendations for complex durable products. These changes will take effect in stages beginning July 1, 2025, and are part of Vermont's broader strategy to safeguard public health and the environment by eliminating PFAS in everyday consumer goods. SGS publishes SafeGuardS to keep stakeholders informed of regulatory developments impacting global product compliance. SafeGuardS 089.25 provides a table highlighting the details of Vermont's revised PFAS regulations and effective dates. Stakeholders are encouraged to review SafeGuardS 089.25 for a complete overview of the amended provisions under Act 54. SGS Chemical Testing SGS offers a comprehensive range of testing services to help manufacturers and suppliers ensure their products are safe and comply with national and international regulations concerning harmful chemicals. Achieving regulatory success with ISO 10993 biocompatibility evaluations
Wed, Jul 02, 2025 04:39 EDT
SGS, the world's leading testing, inspection and certification company, is pleased to announce a complimentary webinar titled 'Biocompatibility Testing - In Vitro and Animal Alternative Tools for ISO 10993 Evaluations', taking place on July 15, 2025. With regulatory authorities placing growing emphasis on biological safety, medical device manufacturers must now provide clear, risk-based biocompatibility evidence aligned with ISO 10993 requirements, within the broader context of ISO 14971 risk management. Foundational tests for cytotoxicity, sensitization and irritation remain critical components of any compliant biological evaluation strategy. In this live webinar, SGS experts Bruce Yang, Toxicologist, and Sebastien Vogel, Customer Service Group Leader, will share practical insights and regulatory strategies for designing and implementing biocompatibility plans that meet current regulatory expectations. Topics will include risk assessment design, test selection, sample preparation, extraction protocols and advances in animal-alternative testing. Thermondo Reduziert Stromkosten im Eigenheim um 30 % - mit KI-gestütztem Energiemanagement
Wed, Jul 02, 2025 04:34 EDT
Hier setzt intelligente Steuerungstechnik an. No Kidding: Montana Woman and Pet Goat's 500-mile Trek for Trafficked Women
Tue, Jul 01, 2025 15:10 EDT
A woman and her pet goat will this week start a 580 mile walk across three states to raise money to support women who have been trafficked. Britney Higgs - founder and CEO of Her Campaign - hopes to raise $580,000 in the month-long journey, with funds allowing them to continue and expand their crucial mission. The mother-of-four starts the Walk For Her challenge on July 2 at Her Campaign's safe house in Billings, Montana, and will trek all the way to their newly established site in Denver, Colorado. But Britney, 35, won't be alone - she will be accompanied by her goat 'Freedom', who she says 'shows the world that anything is possible' after several months of training. Upon completing the challenge, Freedom will become a therapy animal at the Denver site. "If you can train a baby goat to travel with you for 580 miles, anything is possible," says Britney. "Freedom will be walking the allotted amount a baby goat can handle, traveling in a stroller and with the support crew throughout the journey. Who doesn't love a baby goat?" The pair will meet up with supporters and friends throughout the journey and will stay in Britney's RV driven by husband Sammy who will meet them at check points along the way. Britney said: "Every step is a reminder that it will take a nationwide movement to see every survivor and child have access to safe housing to heal and step into freedom. Together, we will see it happen. "We want to impact women who have been through horrendous abuse and see them find freedom. People are always shocked that human trafficking is so prevalent in America. This challenge not only highlights the brutal reality of what's taking place, but gives people the opportunity to be part of the full story." Her Campaign was started after Britney visited Iraq where she worked with women trafficked by ISIS. She discovered the problem was increasing in America and developed a program that offers urgent care for trafficking survivors. Britney, Sammy and their children live across the two sites, supporting their staff team. For more information about Walk For Her, visit http://hercampaign.org/walkforher/ ENDS
Extremely rare sketch in bronze, cast by Rodin himself, for sale at Sloane Street Auctions of July 8 with a £150,000 price tag
Tue, Jul 01, 2025 13:07 EDT
Fallen Angel inspired by Gates of Hell masterpiece An extremely rare bronze cast by Auguste Rodin himself around 1900 comes up for sale at Sloane Street Auctions on July 8 with hopes of £150,000 . Rodin (1840-1917) is considered the Father of Modern Sculpture, best known for The Thinker , The Kiss and the six-metre high, four-metre wide, Gates of Hell , inspired by Dante's Divine Comedy. Known variously as The Fallen Angel or The Fall of the Angels , the sketch in Sloane Street Auctions' sale depicts two entwined figures that recall those on the monumental Gates of Hell and would have been created around 1890, before being cast in bronze around ten years later. The group shows a winged figure, one of the angels referred to as being cast out of Heaven after siding with Satan (Revelation 12:4). A marble version appears in The Cleveland Museum collection, but this bronze, with a green and brown patina with black undertones, was produced using the sandcasting method typical of Rodin. It was probably cast at the Griffoul Foundry, Paris and is signed 'A. Rodin' It is thought that one more cast of this piece may have been made at the Alexis Rudier foundry sometime later. However, that cast - if it ever existed - remains untraced, and documentation that survives suggests that it may have been of the finished model rather than sketch. Whether this piece is unique or not, the cast of the sketch, on sale here, is certainly extremely rare. There are no posthumous casts. The estimate is £120,000-150,000. Crucially, the bronze sketch also has an impeccable provenance dating back almost a century. Auction records show it sold at the Hotel Drouot's Etude Baudouin-Bellier in Paris on June 9, 1933. Subsequent sales include Sotheby's in London, in June and then November 1966; Sotheby's New York, in April, 1968; Etude Briest at the Hotel Drouot in June, 1987; and Christie's in London in June 2000, where it was acquired by the H. Gordon Collection of New York (acquired at the above sale). It later entered a UK private collection. "As well as its wonderful provenance and signature, the sheer artistry of this magnificent piece leaves the viewer in no doubt that this is the work of Rodin, the master of sculpture in its modern form, " said Daniel Hunt, owner of Sloane Street Auctions. "This is even rare than his greatest works, which occur in several versions, so this really is a one-off opportunity for the connoisseur to acquire such a piece. "These sort of pieces would have been a natural fit for Christie's South Kensington in its day, but now that has gone, we find that consignors tend to come to us, so we are delighted to play our part in keeping this tradition of higher end works coming to London beyond the confines of Bond Street and St James. It is also a happy coincidence that our auctioneer, Hugh Edmeades, was Christie's South Kensington's former chairman." BBC Highlights Growing Trend of Americans Seeking Care in Thailand
Tue, Jul 01, 2025 12:28 EDT
Rising care costs, political and social anxiety are contributing to trend A recent BBC report highlighted an under-the-radar trend that's quietly been picking up steam among older Americans and their adult children. As costs rise and, in some parts of the country, anxiety over recent social and political events increases, the prospect of moving abroad, specifically to Thailand, has begun to look increasingly appealing. Sean Conner and his wife, Rachel, fall into the adult child category of Americans who have experienced the aforementioned care crisis. When Sean's dad faced a dementia diagnosis it quickly became clear that what he could afford wasn't in line with the dignity the Conners felt he deserved. "The level of care he could afford stateside was, quite honestly, not something anyone would want for their loved one," Conner explained.Because Rachel had experience working internationally, the Conners were able to find care in Thailand through a company called VivoCare . Today, Sean's father is living a life he couldn't possibly afford in the States, with care that exceeds even the highest levels found in the U.S., especially regarding resident/caregiver ratios, which are often as high as 1:1. "The average family doesn't necessarily have the international ties we had," said Rachel. "That's why we've found ourselves involved working with VivoCare to help spread the word." Many older adults living in the United States find themselves caught in what's come to be known as the great care gap - they made too much and saved too much to qualify for affordable housing and other forms of government assistance but didn't earn or save enough to qualify for higher end senior care options. The solution, the Conners believe, might be found in looking abroad - especially in Thailand. "The cost of living combined with the investment that's been made in bringing western-style care and amenities to the country makes it the perfect location for U.S. residents who are open to the idea of moving across the ocean."While the Conners acknowledge the idea isn't for everyone, the bigger challenge is reaching the people who would be open to the idea but don't know it exists. "It's an information game and the bigger dementia care and assisted living communities in the states aren't necessarily interested in spreading the word."
New Kids Science Camp to Launch This Summer in Wakefield and Rotherham
Tue, Jul 01, 2025 02:52 EDT
North Yorkshire families with budding astronauts, inventors, or scientists are set for a summer of fun with the launch of an exciting new summer holiday club for kids 5 - 11 years old. The Mini Professors Science Holiday Club will open in three locations across Wakefield and Rotherham later this month and promises to keep youngsters entertained with cool science experiments, inclusive outdoor activities and enjoyable games during the school holidays. Borrowing from the American tradition of summer camps, the clubs run Monday - Friday, with youngsters able to sign up for just one day or join in for the whole week. After the success of its holiday clubs in Leicester, Weymouth and Milton Keynes last year, Mini Professors is now adding Wakefield and Rotherham to its school holiday schedule. The North Yorkshire summer camps are a great way to keep busy minds active and continue to shape curiosity during the long summer break. Engaging and exciting experiments include everyday objects and ideas, transformed into magical moments. Some of the most memorable include creating a baking soda and vinegar volcano to explore chemical reactions in a fizzy, fun way or making a DIY lava lamp by mixing oil, water, food colouring, and a fizzy tablet. Mini Professors holiday clubs also include outdoor explorations that everyone can join in with - taking a walk and counting insects, observing different types of clouds, or collecting leaves and learning about why they change colour. Mini Professors Director, Abi Davis said, "With our summer holiday clubs we're hoping to do something a little different and engage children who aren't interested in typical art or sports camps over the school holidays. Parents can sign up online and choose as many days as they'd like, then drop their kids off in the morning with a packed lunch. "Each day is fun filled, engaging and exciting with lots of hands-on activities to enjoy. We had such great feedback from our soft launch last year that we're excited to now offer clubs in Wakefield and Rotherham for the upcoming school break." The Mini Professors Holiday Clubs will take place on the following dates: Westerton Primary Academy ( Hesketh Lane, Wakefield, WF3 1AR ): Monday 28 Jul 2025 - Friday 01 August WOW Centre Wakefield ( 50 Wrenthorpe Road, Wakefield, WF2 0LP ): Tuesday 26th August - Friday 29th August WOW Centre Rotherham ( The Hattersley Building, Unit 8 White Lea Rd, Swinton, S64 8BH ): Monday August 11 - Tuesday August 12 For further information, visit: https://www.miniprofessors.com/wakefield /
